Highway Closes After Two Semis Crash Near Fort Wayne

Two tractor-trailer trucks were involved in a crash on westbound U.S. 30 outside of Fort Wayne, Ind., on the morning of Friday, Feb. 3, The Journal Gazette reports. The Indiana Department of Transportation reported that dense fog in the area is causing hazardous travel conditions and may have contributed to the accident. No details on the condition of either driver were available, but U.S. 30 was likely going to remain closed until early afternoon.

TRUCK ACCIDENT FAST FACT: According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Long Combination Vehicles (LCVs) are likely to be involved in a fatal truck accident at rates at least 11% higher than single tractor trailers.

Tractor-Trailer, Passenger Car Collide in New York’s Hudson Valley

A passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer truck collided in Philipstown, N.Y. on Thursday, Feb. 2, spilling more than 100 gallons of fuel onto Route 9 and leaving the driver of the car hospitalized. According to lohud.com, the car was traveling southbound on Route 9 and crossed the double-yellow line when it struck the northbound tractor-trailer. The driver of the truck was uninjured, according to the report. Cleanup crews spent several hours cleaning the highway before it reopened.

Parts Developer Strives to Correct Faulty Valve Situation

As many as 60,000 commercial trucks may be affected by a faulty valve on vehicles equipped with traction control and stability systems manufactured by Bendix, according to Fleet Owner. Responding to driver complaints, Bendix investigated the issue and reported its findings to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Jan. 26. The malfunction reportedly causes inconsistent braking performance, and Bendix is urging any drivers using an affected vehicle to bring it in for service. The company also reported that it is not aware of circumstances where the faulty valve has led to personal injury.

Truck Driver Used Methamphetamines Before Fatal Crash

The driver who lost his life when his tractor-trailer crashed into a BMW near Buellton, Calif., on Jan. 12, was high on methamphetamines at the time of the crash, toxicology reports show. The Santa Barbara Independent writes that toxicology reports show the driver was actively using the drug, either while driving or during a stop within 30 minutes of accident. Three passengers in the BMW were trapped in their vehicle for over an hour before being rescued. All were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Train Crashes into Semi-Truck in Rural Michigan

The driver of a semi-truck escaped with only minor injuries after an Amtrak train crashed into his vehicle Wednesday, Feb. 1, in Leoni Twp. in southern Michigan. According to mlive.com, an investigation continues as to why the truck was apparently stuck on Portage Road straddling the rail crossing when the train plowed into it. Ten people, including the driver of the truck and the operator of the train, were sent to the hospital following the crash. The train was en route to Chicago when the accident occurred.

Police Officer Killed in Accident with Logging Truck

A Civilian Reserve Police Officer with the Waynesboro Police Department in Georgia was killed in a truck accident on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 1, when his Ford Ranger was struck by an 18-wheel log-hauling truck. According to WJBF.com, the truck accident occurred at Drone Road and Highway 24 between the towns of Waynesboro and Vidette in eastern Georgia. According to the report, the officer turned left onto Highway 24 and into the path of the oncoming log truck. The accident remains under investigation.

Two Trucks Collide in Northern Michigan

A logging truck and a flatbed tractor-trailer were involved in a two-vehicle crash in northern Michigan’s Iron Mountain on Monday, Jan. 30. Logs were strewn across the intersection at Stephenson Avenue and Lake Antoine Road following the accident. A report from UpperMichigansSource.com indicate the logging truck was attempting to make a left turn when it struck by the oncoming flatbed truck. Both vehicles were disabled in the crash, but neither driver was injured.

Two Trucks Crash, Knock Out Power in Beddington

Two truck drivers miraculously sustained only minor injuries after their trucks collided while driving in opposite directions on Route 9 in Beddington, Me., on Wednesday, Feb. 1, according to WABI.tv. The highway was closed for hours following the accident, which resulted in a row of utility poles being destroyed, leaving nearly 200 Washington County residents without power. One of the trucks involved was hauling propane.

TRUCK ACCIDENT FAST FACT: According to American Trucking Associations, the large truck fatal crash rate dropped by 14 percent over the past decade.

Connecticut Freeway Closed After Tractor-Trailer Accident

A crash involving two cars and a tractor-trailer truck closed portions of I-95 in Norwalk, Conn., during the afternoon rush hour on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The Daily Norwalk reports that the trailer, which overturned to force hours-long lane closures, hit a barrier and caught fire. Two passenger vehicles were also involved, although details of the condition of the drivers were not reported. The driver of the truck was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Multiple-Truck Accident in Arkansas Leaves Driver in Serious Condition

Three semi-trucks were involved in an accident on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 1, just outside Reyno in northeast Arkansas, according to KAIT.com. In a truck accident believed to be caused by heavy fog that blanketed the area, a grain truck was pulling onto Highway 328 from Highway 67 and was struck by a refrigerated truck driving south on 328. Seconds later, a third truck driving northbound collided with the overturned refrigerated truck. It took emergency crews almost two hours to get the driver of the refrigerated truck from the cab of her vehicle. She was transferred to a nearby medical facility and listed in serious condition. The drivers of the other two vehicles escaped with only minor injuries.
