Truck Accident Weekly Roundup: June 28 – July 05

Mansfield NewsJournal.com reports that a semitrailer failed to stop for traffic flagged to a stop on Ohio 13 north of Richland County, Ohio, and slammed into at least nine vehicles before coming to rest in a field where it burst into flames. Several people, including children, from several of the vehicles were injured, some very seriously. Ohio Highway Patrol officers reported that no citations were issued, but that the truck accident investigation is ongoing.

Vcstar.com reports that a tractor-trailer rig pulled in front of a van on the Pacific Coast Highway north of Ventura, California, causing the van to crash into the truck and injuring two teens in the van. The California Highway Patrol reports that the semi-truck was stopped on the shoulder and failed to yield when it pulled back onto the PCH. The driver of the van was trapped and was freed by firefighters. He was treated at a nearby hospital for arm and leg fractures and cuts and bruises to his head.

Jconline.com reports that a semi-trailer tipped over on U.S. 24 near West Lafayette, Indiana, crushing a minivan and injuring its driver. The truck crash was caused by excessive speed as the driver of the big rig took a curve at high speeds, causing his semi-trailer to overturn. Indiana State Police cited the big rig’s driver for driving too fast for conditions.

Omaha.com reports that a semitrailer truck crashed into a turning vehicle on Highway 15 north of Schuyler, Nebraska, killing a passenger in the vehicle and critically injuring the vehicle’s driver. The truck accident is under investigation by the Colfax County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol.

The Denver Post.com reports that the driver of a big rig caused an accident on I-70 in Mesa County, Colorado when he placed reflective emergency triangles on the roadway, causing a car to overturn in its attempt to avoid them, and resulting in the death of a passenger in that vehicle. The Colorado State Patrol states that the big rig’s driver placed the emergency triangles in a traffic lane of the interstate rather than on the shoulder where his broken-down semi was parked. The triangles were around a curve. The passenger vehicle rounded the curve, swerved to avoid the triangles, overturned, and crashed into a second vehicle. The passenger in the first vehicle was thrown from that vehicle and died after being airlifted to a nearby hospital. The driver of the vehicle was also injured, but there is no word on her condition. The Colorado State Patrol reports that the driver of the big rig will face negligent homicide charges following this truck accident.

Jacksonville.com reports that a commercial truck slammed into the driver’s side of a passenger vehicle at North Pearl and West Union Streets in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, killing the car’s driver and leaving a passenger in the vehicle hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The force of the crash was so great that the passenger vehicle was nearly completely flattened and was pushed off the road and into a nearby church building. A police spokesperson said they were investigating whether speed played a role in the crash.

The Grand Island Independent reports that a semitrailer made a right hand turn from the center lane of Second Street in Grand Island, Nebraska and struck a passenger vehicle in the right lane. Two passengers in the vehicle were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated for their injuries. Grand Island Police are investigating the truck crash.

The News Star.com reports that a semi-tractor struck a John Deere tractor on Jackson Street in Monroe, Louisiana when the semi attempted to pass the tractor in a no-passing zone. The driver of the John Deere was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Monroe Police cited the driver of the semi-tractor truck for improper passing.

I get personally offended when, for example, an insurance company offers a pittance when one of their insured’s vehicles crosses a centerline and kills somebody’s mother. QuincyNews.org reports that a woman in a passenger vehicle sustained an injury to her neck when a semi-tractor trailer struck her vehicle at the intersection of 36th Street and Broadway Street in Quincy, Illinois. The big rig made a right-hand turn into the passenger vehicle, which was traveling in the same direction. No arrests were made in this truck accident.

WTVQ.com reports that a tractor trailer struck the rear of a pickup truck, killing the truck’s driver. The truck crash happened on I-75 in Whitley County, Kentucky. The pickup truck was stopped for an unknown reason and had its lights flashing when the big rig struck it.

KTIV.com reports that a tractor-trailer struck a passenger vehicle on U.S. Highway 77 south of Fremont, Nebraska, killing the female driver of the passenger vehicle. Fog was described as heavy at the time of the crash but Saunders County investigators do not yet know if it contributed to the crash.

KansasCity.com reports that the driver of a semi-truck lost control of his vehicle on U.S. 71 near Belton, Kansas and struck three vehicles, injuring three people. The big rig struck one vehicle with such force it pushed it across the highway median and into steel barriers of the opposing lane of traffic. Emergency crews transported two victims of the truck crash to a nearby hospital and a third victim was transported by air ambulance with severe injuries.

WBAY.com reports that a tanker truck slammed into the back of an SUV at the intersection of County Highway PP and Prairie Road in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, injuring two people. The SUV was stopped behind a second tractor-trailer making a left-hand turn when the tanker truck crashed into it. The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries. Authorities’ initial reports cite speed as a contributing factor in the crash.

ABC4.com reports that a semi-tractor trailer lost control on I-15 in Iron County, Utah and struck the rear of a passenger vehicle, killing the vehicle’s 25-year-old driver. The woman had stopped her car behind a previous accident when the big rig slammed into her vehicle.

Sheboyganpress.com reports that a semitrailer truck ran a stop sign at Highway 57 and Highway J in Plymouth, Wisconsin, causing a 37-year-old woman in a passenger car to crash into the big rig and leaving her with chest and leg injuries. The driver of the semitrailer truck was cited for failure to stop for a stop sign.

The Associated Press reports that a semi truck rear-ended a passenger vehicle on I-95 in Washington, D.C. leaving two people in the passenger vehicle injured, one seriously. One victim, a 69-year-old woman, is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. She sustained injuries to her back, neck and nose in the truck crash. Reid’s daughter was injured, and was released from the hospital. The driver of the big rig was charged with reckless driving in the incident and has been charged with speeding on two prior occasions.

WCFCourier.com reports that a semi tractor trailer struck a passenger vehicle on Highway 20 in Hardin County, Iowa, injuring the vehicle’s 86-year-old driver. Iowa State Patrol officers are investigating the truck crash that sent the victim to the hospital with minor injuries.

WSMV.com reports that a multi-vehicle crash has left a semi-trailer driver dead and at least two other people injured following a wreck on I-65 near Millersville, Tennessee. According to The Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash was initiated when high winds caused the driver of the semi-tractor trailer to lose control and crash into opposing traffic. The resulting crash involved two other semis, a car and a pickup truck.

LongIslandPress.com reports that the driver of a tanker truck was killed when he attempted to pass a passenger vehicle on the Long Island Expressway and veered into the car instead, causing the tanker truck to flip and explode into flames and leaving the driver of the passenger car with non life-threatening injuries. Firefighters and emergency crews battled a raging inferno for hours after the crash.

NBCChicago.com reports that a big rig rear-ended a completely full 18-passenger van on I-65 30 miles south of Indianapolis on Sunday, killing two passengers in the van and injuring the other 16. The injured passengers in the van were taken to a local hospital with what a Sheriff’s Department spokesperson described as injuries ranging from minor to critical. The van’s passengers were members of an extended family including children, returning from a kite flying convention in Georgia.

MyPlainview.com of Plainview, Texas reports that a man was hospitalized after an accident on I-27 in Plainview when a semi truck failed to yield and struck his vehicle, causing it to flip onto its roof. Paramedics transported the victim to nearby Covenant Hospital. No details are yet available about his injuries.

DailyWorld reports that a 29-year-old Lafayette, Louisiana man was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler as he walked home on I-49 near Carencro. Louisiana State Police report that toxicology samples were taken from the driver of the 18-wheeler, but results are not yet available.

Progress-index.com reports that two people were injured, one fatally, when the Penske rental truck they were traveling in collided with a tractor-trailer on I-95 in Prince George County, Virginia. Virginia State Police were unable to provide details of the cause of the crash, but indicated that charges were pending.

KETV.com of Omaha, Nebraska reports that a man was injured when his car and a semitrailer truck collided on I-80 near Omaha, leaving his vehicle wedged under the big rig. Nebraska State Police are continuing their investigation of the crash.

Thedailyreview.com reports that a Gillett, Pennsylvania woman was hospitalized with severe head injuries after her pickup truck was struck by a tractor trailer on Mott Town Road and Route 14 in South Creek Township, Pennsylvania. Details of the cause of the crash are unavailable at this time. The victim is in critical condition at Robert Packer Hospital.

BenningtonBanner.com reports that a 36-year-old Greenwich, New York man was injured in Shaftsbury, Vermont when a Freight Line tractor-trailer lost its load, which then struck the victim’s vehicle on Vermont Route 67 near the New York border. The Shaftsbury Fire Department and Bennington Rescue assisted at the scene where the victim’s vehicle sustained heavy damage when the load, including a large tire and extra bucket for a front-end loader, slid off the big rig while it was cornering.

Salina.com reports that a 22-year-old Oberlin, Kansas woman was killed on Kansas Highway 23 when a semitrailer crossed the center line and struck her compact car head-on. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the semi left its lane to avoid a slow-moving vehicle, which may indicate excessive speed on the part of the big rig.

Missoula Montana’s Missoulian reports that four people injured in a crash on I-90 are lucky to be alive after their truck collided with a crashed semi just east of Missoula. The semi driver was cited for careless driving after Montana Highway Patrol determined that the semi’s wreck was likely due to the driver’s falling asleep. Patrolmen also noted that the semi driver failed to promptly put out orange triangles or flares to indicate a wreck.

KHAS-TV reports that at least 7 Nebraskans died in the last several days in separate incidents on slick roads. In one incident on I-80 in central Nebraska, a man was killed when a semi crossed the median, struck his car and then rolled on top of it. Nebraska State Patrol reports that the wreck occurred near Wood River on Wednesday night.

Wausaudailyherald.com reports that a Mosinee, Wisconsin police officer received a laceration on the back of his head when a semitrailer truck lost control and smashed into his cruiser near I-39 and Highway 153 on Saturday morning. The officer was tending to an accident at the time of the semi truck crash. The driver of the semi was cited for failure to have control of a vehicle.

Reports on WBIR.com indicate that an accident on Tennessee Highway 11-E involving a large box truck and a pickup truck has left one man with serious but non life-threatening injuries. The accident occurred when the driver of the box truck, which was hauling another truck in its trailer, failed to yield to oncoming traffic and pulled out onto the highway in front of the pickup truck.

Sequingazette.com reports that a man lost his life on Interstate 10 in Guadalupe County, Texas when a tractor trailer smashed into the victim’s vehicle after the big rig’s driver lost control of his vehicle and crossed into oncoming traffic. An initial statement by a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper indicated that the 18-wheeler hydroplaned before colliding with the other vehicle.

According to Tallahassee.com a man was killed and another received serious injuries when the pickup truck they were travelling in was rear-ended by a semi-tractor truck on Interstate 10 in Madison County, Florida on Tuesday, November 17. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that the driver of the big rig was uninjured in the crash.

ABClocal.go.com reports that a truck accident on Friday, November 20, left one person dead and at least two others seriously injured, one in critical condition. The accident on Interstate 57 near Monee, Illinois involved a total of eight vehicles and occurred after a semi-tractor trailer failed to observe a traffic stop.

The State Journal.com reports that a semi-tractor trailer lost control and flipped over onto a passenger vehicle leaving its driver in intensive care with a compressed fracture of the spine. The crash occurred on Short Creek Road near Wheeling, West Virginia on November 16. A local Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said that the crash was “definitely speed related.”

A report on Nebraska.tv states that a semi-trailer truck driver was killed and the driver of a passenger vehicle was seriously injured Friday when the semi truck broadsided a third vehicle on Highway 81 in Thayer County near Lincoln, Nebraska, initiating a three-vehicle crash. The deceased semi-truck driver was from Canada and the injured driver of the passenger vehicle is a resident of St. Edward, Nebraska. Another Nebraskan, the driver of the third vehicle involved in the crash, was uninjured. Investigation of the crash is ongoing.
